About Ohorongo

Ohorongo Cement Plant

Ohorongo (Pty) Ltd. is Namibia’s only cement-producing company and owns the most modern cement plant in Africa. It was constructed over the course of two years by leading international engineering company Polysius, with local companies involved in the provision of infrastructure and the building of civil works, at a total cost of N$ 2.5 billion.

Ohorongo (Pty) Ltd commenced production in December 2010 and is slated to turn out more than 700,000 tons of high-quality cement annully for local consumption as well as for export purposes .

Significantly, all raw materials required for the production process are sourced in Namibia and the entire value chain takes place within the country. Ohorongo cement is a truly and proudly Namibian product.

Corporate Policy and Objectives

Building is aligned against the needs of the individual within our pluralist world and does not happen in a vacuum. This, more than ever, renders us in a state of mutual responsibility. It is acknowledged that especially construction comes with an obligation towards nature, our social structure, and quality of life and the sustainable utilisation of natural resources. It is our common assignment to construct a world within which our children and the next generations can still feel at home.

It is for this goal that we produce cement for life. With this exact maxim we embrace our responsibility for the future and introduce it as our philosophy. In terms of this principle we deploy technical advancement, develop new products and improve our efficiency and environmental thoughtfulness.

To support this, management of Ohorongo Cement decided on a comprehensive and verifiable system for the assurance of quality, environmental protection, industrial health and safety and social accountability in terms of the international standards DIN EN ISO 9001, DIN EN ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 and SA 8000 (this includes a commitment to comply with the world human rights convention as well as the International Labour Organization for children and other human rights foundations). The periodic auditing in terms of DIN EN ISO 9001, DIN EN 14001 will be conducted through an independent certification institute.

Ohorongo Cement is committed to improve working conditions and ensuring compliance with the Social Accountability and ILO Code of practice on HIV/Aids covering topics such as Child Labour, Forced/ Compulsory Labour, Health & Safety, Freedom of association and right to collective bargaining, Discrimination, Disciplinary practices, W orking hours, Remuneration, Management system for human resources, HIV/AIDS and also to provide a safe, healthy and social workplace and conducting its business activities in a manner that protects the environment.

Safe, healthy and social working conditions for our employees and all persons on our premises remain is an important foundation for the success of our company.

Our plant in Sargberg does not stand alone, but is an intergral part of the environment. The plant shares this environment with the people, animals and plants of the region, and we are committed to treat the environment with care and respect. Environment protection – with particular attention to the control of air pollution, water protection, noise and vibration prevention as well as the stringent protection of nature is therefore Ohorongo Cements highest priority. W e train our employees to raise awareness of the HSE risks and hazards and ensure that employees possess the necessary knowledge to work safely.

Through adherence to all applicable legal obligations with regard to the HSE, the principals for prevention of incidents, injuries and pollution or, if inevitable, to minimise the negative impact on the environment. In addition, we significantly contribute to environmental protection by the deployment of alternative energy for the burning of clinker. Moreover, Ohorongo Cement has put in place additional measures with the goal to protect the environment.




Moreover, especially in terms of the quality assurance of our product, Ohorongo Cement is committed to guarantee the product quality regarding the requirements of SANS 50197-1.

The production of our plant is organised in terms of SANS 50197 -2 to ensure a proper manufacturing process. The standards 50197 -1 and 50197 -2 are applicable to all departments and locations of Ohorongo Cement and especially for the plant at Sargberg.

The corporate policy and HSEQ targets and objects of Ohorong Cement is formulated and regularly evaluated by Management. Management is responsible that this corporate policy as well as the Integrated Management System (IMS) Manual is accessible to every employee and communicated so that every employee understands both policy and manual.

The Management expresses their commitment to the IMS Manual and all relevant documents. All co-workers are obliged to actively take part in the process of constant improvement to the overall performance of the enterprise.

Ohorongo Cement is Namibia’s only cement manufacturer. Situated in the North of Namibia, close to the village of Otavi, construction started in 2009 with first production in 2011, making Ohorongo the most modern cement plant in Africa. Ohorongo sustainably produces world class cement for the Namibian and regional consumers, as well as to a smaller export market.

Company Roots

Ohorongo traces roots back to the late 1800s, when the Schwenk family first started the production of cement in Ulm, Germany. Since then, the Schwenk family has invested in terms of technology and human capital, so that today, the enterprise has developed into a major player in the German cement industry.

During 2007 the Schwenk group expanded their horizon to invest in Namibia. The generous resource to the North of Otavi promised a sustainable supply of raw material for world class cement.

Technology and Alternative Energy

Schwenk has always been on the forefront for development and technological advancement. From the start this culture was introduced to Ohorongo. The plant is equipped with the facilities to use biomass instead of coal for the burning of clinker. Through this, Ohorongo’s plant is one of the plants worldwide with the lowest CO2 emissions according to EU standards.
