Ohorongo Cement, through the Ohorongo Otavi Community Trust (OOCT), donated 2 300 bags of cement to the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture today.

The donation, valued at N$ 230 000.00, was donated in support of the celebration of the Day of The African Child, which is celebrated on 16 June annually.

This year’s celebration of the Day of the Africa Child will be held under the theme, “The 2030 Agenda for sustainable development for children in Africa: Accelerating protection, empowerment and equal opportunity.”

“The decision was also fuelled to benefit education, as a result of the numerous requests for cement donations, of which the majority came from schools. As a responsible corporate citizen, Ohorongo Cement, through OOCT, agreed to donate cement to the education sector through the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture,” said Hans-Wilhelm Schütte, the Managing Director of Ohorongo Cement.

Schütte added that Ohorongo Cement will continue to support projects that hold out the promise of adding social value to Namibia, through the relevant Ministries and Institutions that govern it.

Honorable Katrina Hanse-Himarwa, Minister of Education, Arts and Culture, received the cement donation on behalf of the Ministry and expressed her gratitude to Ohorongo Cement for its continued support to education.

“You have played your part in ensuring that our children can have an enabling, learning and teaching environment. I am confident that this donation is not an end in itself, but a means to an end,” she said.

She added that the donation by Ohorongo Cement to education shows that the dreams and aspirations of the 16 June 1976 student uprising were not in vain.

The cement donation will go towards the construction of extra class rooms, ablution and cooking facilities for schools in the central northern region and eastern regions of Namibia (Omusati, Oshana, Ohangwena, Oshikoto and Zambezi regions).

Ohorongo cement also constructed a kindergarten at Gam settlement in the rural Otjozondjupa region last year, as part of its contribution towards early childhood development. Thus far the company has donated in excess of nineteen million Namibian Dollars (N$ 19 000 000.00) towards various social upliftment initiatives during the past 6 years of its inception.
