A brand-new facility for the Indjee-Kondjerera Kindergarten and Soup Kitchen in Gam, constructed with the assistance of the Ohorongo Otavi Community Trust (OOCT), was inaugurated on 10 October 2016 by the Governor of the Otjozondjupa Region.

Pre-scholars under the age of six at the Gam settlement in the Otjozondjupa Region have been receiving education in a small room at the house of Ms. Uandaa Kamutati for over 15 years.

The Governor of Otjozondjupa Region, Hon. Otto Ipinge, felt that the environment was not conducive for the children. As such, during the 25th Independence Celebrations cement truckload hand-over in Kalkveld, he approached Ohorongo Cement for assistance to build a proper kindergarten in Gam settlement.

As part of OOCT’s pillars of Infrastructure and Education, Ohorongo Cement, agreed to support the project.

On the 27th of June 2016, a delegation consisting the Governor of Otjozondjupa Region, Hon. Otto Ipinge, Chairman of the Regional Council of Otjozondjupa, Hon. Julius Neumbo and Markus Damaseb, on behalf of OOCT, had a groundbreaking event, which paved the way for the construction of the requested facilities.

The Kindergarten and Soup Kitchen was constructed by NAS Investments over a period of over three months, and consists of 2 classrooms and a soup kitchen, valued at about N$500 000. This project was also supported by Henning Crusher in Tsumeb who donated the sand, stone, bricks and transport thereof to Gam, as well as by International Facilities Services who donated a gas stove with an oven, as well as tables and chairs for the little ones. Okarakara Councilor, Vetaruhe Kandorozu, donated a computer in support.

“Education as a human right is one of the driving forces for Namibia’s development, and we at Ohorongo believe that it is our obligation to assist the Namibian Government in achieving its goals, as set out in the country’s Vision 2030 plan, Harambee and NDP4,” said the Mr. Schütte.

During the official programme, Hon. Ipinge thanked Ohorongo Cement for executing its promise in such a short period of time.

“Allow me to express our sincere gratitude to Ohorongo Cement for their continued support towards education. Their invaluable support to this sector makes it possible for Namibia to fulfill her solemn obligation of providing education. I am happy that education ranks high on Ohorongo Cement’s agenda, and that they are playing their part in ensuring that the doors of learning are open to all who are willing to learn,” he said.

He then officially handed over the facilities to Ms. Kamutati, who received it on behalf of the community of Gam.

“To the community of Gam, these facilities are for the benefit of the whole community, and your challenge is to ensure that these facilities are fully utilized and regularly maintained,” said the Governor.

An emotional Ms. Kamutati received the new facilities on behalf of the community and promised to utilize it for the intended purposes.

“Thank you very much to everyone who made this possible for our children in this remote area. I will ensure that they will become productive members our community one day,” she said.

“Ohorongo is a firm supporter of projects that uplift our people. We like to associate our brand with projects like this, which promises recurring benefits to the community for years to come,” said Ohorongo Cement’s Managing Director; Hans-Wilhelm Schütte during the inauguration ceremony.
