Ohorongo Cement yet again showed its commitment to supporting its region by acting as co-sponsor to the Namibian Newspaper Cup 2014.

This was announced on Tuesday morning at Football House in Windhoek at the official launch of the event which is to take place at the Oscar Norich Stadium in Tsumeb from 18 – 21 April 2014.

Although Mr Hans-Wilhelm Shuette, Managing Director, was unable to attend the launch in person, he made the following comment: “Sport is a great platform to use for the upliftment of the youth in the community and Ohorongo fully supports this venture, believing that this is the way to identify and develop talent and Namibia’s future sports heroes.”

The event is also used as a platform to select youth for the National Team.

There are a few reasons why the decision was made by Ohorongo Cement to support this venture:

  • The event is taking place very close to the Ohorongo plant and many of the Ohorongo employees live in Tsumeb;
  • To support the promotion & development of the youth by using sport as a platform;
  • The strong social responsibility aspect involved for the hosting region due to financial influx of cash into the local economy of the host town through bookings for accommodation, food sales etc.

A couple of years ago a study was done regarding the financial influx into the hosting town and it was estimated to be in excess of N$ 2 million.

Since 2001 The Namibian Regional Soccer Cup has been one of the most exciting competitions of the local football calendar.

Representatives from 13 regions in the country battle it out over annually over 28 matches to receive the coveted trophy.

The prize money has increased substantially compared to previous years.The winning team will walk away with N$ 30 000 and the runner-up will receive N$ 15 000. Third place will receive N$ 10 000 and the fourth team to finish will get N$ 6 000. Man of the Match monies has also increased from N$ 250 to N$ 500.

Ohorongo was thanked for getting on board as a sponsor by the Secretary General of the NFA, Mr Barry Rukoro, the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sport, Ms Julieta Kavetuna and the Editor of The Namibian, Mr Tangeni Amuphadi.

“We are happy to hear that the Ministry of Youth and Sport also committed to supply transport to the teams to Tsumeb to enable them to participate.

We trust that this year the defending champions Otjozondjupa region will make use of this opportunity to again defeat the other regions. We hope they will make us proud,” said Schuette.

With Ohorongo on their side, this event is SET FOR SUCCESS!!
