Certifies that the company Ohorongo Cement (Pty) Ltd, Ohorongohaus, Schanzenweg 35, Windhoek, Namibia has implemented and maintains a quality and environmental management system.
Ohorongo Cement is situated in the North of Namibia, close to Otavi. Construction started in 2009 with first production in 2011, making Ohorongo Cement one of the most modern cement plants in Africa. Currently the plant sustainably produces cement of international quality for both the local, as well as for export markets. It has a production capacity in excess of a million tonnes per annum, focusing mainly on Namibian projects and consumption, but also caters for exports to neigbouring countries.
Ohorongo traces its roots back to the late 1800s, when the Schwenk family first started the production of cement in Ulm, Germany. Since then, the Schwenk family continued to invest in terms of technology and human capital, making it one of the major players in the German cement industry.
During 2007, the Schwenk group expanded their horizon to invest in Namibia. This investment was done based on the availability of all raw materials in Namibia, which enables the production of World class cement.
A culture of technological advancement and innovation has been started at Ohorongo from the very beginning. The plant utilizes various locally fuels, so called alternative fuels, to replace the import of fossil fuels from outside Namibia and to reduce the environmental impact. Alternative fuels have been successfully used since 2011. Presently wood chips derived from encroacher bushes, charcoal fines and refuse derived fuel are being burnt in the clinker process at temperatures of above 2,000 degrees Celsius. Besides multiple benefits for the environment (contribution to reduction of bush encroachment, to reduction of landfill waste and to increased biodiversity) also numerous new jobs have been created via these initiatives. Last but not least the usage of alternative fuels combined with the energy efficient process makes Ohorongo’s Sargberg plant to one of the lowest specific (in tons of CO² per ton of clinker) CO² emitting cement plants worldwide.
As a company and as individuals, Ohorongo Cement takes great pride in contributing towards the communities in which they operate. It is one of the few cement manufacturing companies in the world to receive certification on ISO 14001:2015. This confirms the company’s continued commitment towards sustainability and caring for the environment in order to leave a lasting legacy.
Internally, to ensure that our employees are well equipped for the task at hand, Ohorongo Cement cares for its own employees by providing formal training if required. The company has put a human resource development system in place, giving employees the chance to improve their skills and capabilities and to test themselves against new opportunities.
Externally, the company offers job attachments, internships & bursaries from a wide variety of educational disciplines. This assists with preparing applicants for future recruitment into the industry with relevant technical experience, to meet the requirements of the current industry.
The companies’ Corporate Social Investment Projects are actioned through the Ohorongo Otavi Community Trust (OOCT), focusing mainly on 3 pillars: Education, Healthcare & Infrastructure.
Ohorongo Cement recognizes that Namibia and region needs a world class cement to set proper foundations for economic development, and to assist with attracting foreign investors. The company diligently strives to continuously contribute towards Public-Private-Partnerships and support Government initiatives like Vision 2030, Growth at Home and the National Development Plans to affect change.
