We provide ample opportunity for personal development to every individual in our employ, and we offer fair remuneration, medical and old age pension, so that each of our employees may comfortably provide for their families and make provisions for their old age.

Local First

In general, the positive impact a company may have on income volumes and socio-economic development at local and national levels, is often underestimated or not accurately reflected in the bigger economic picture. In the case of Ohorongo Cement (Pty) Ltd, prognostic calculations indicate that the company is set to contribute a remarkable more than one percent towards the total Namibian GDP. Management aims to amplify this economic impact by giving procurement preference to local suppliers and to purchase local products wherever possible.

This approach is already apparent in that Ohorongo is one of the very few Namibian companies in which the entire value chain in the manufacturing of the product, from bare limestone rock to world-class cement, is carried out using only Namibian raw materials.

Awards

Ohorongo previously won the EIF Award for Environmental Excellence Among Industries, as well as the Gold Award for NMA Most Environmentally Friendly Manufacturer of the Year for a few consecutive years.

The company also won the runner-up NSI Awards for Product of the Year, Quality Company of the Year, as well as Quality Service of the Year.

The Environment

Ohorongo Cement takes full responsibility towards the physical environment and is doing everything possible to protect our natural surroundings by using resources sparingly and with least impact on the environment.

We will use all available technological means to monitor, pre-empt, prevent and rehabilitate any harmful environmental impact our operations might have on an ongoing basis. We are committed to adopting and implementing technological advances in terms of efficiency, quality, safety, and environmental protection and we will constantly improve processes and operations at our plant.

Ohorongo Cement is certified with ISO 14001:2015

Community Development

The location of our cement plant, close to the town of Otavi in the Otjozondjupa region, provides the opportunity to work in close partnership with the Otavi Town council in support of the inhabitants of the local community. To this end, the Ohorongo Otavi Community Trust was founded with the goal of improving the livelihoods of those living in Otavi and surrounds. This support is envisaged as helping the local authorities with development of the community and to assist in the economic growth and improvement of the town.

Corporate Citizenship

Based on an annual production of more than 1 million tons of cement per annum, Ohorongo’s limestone deposit yields reserves for more than 300 years.

This represents a major commitment to Namibia and puts great responsibility on Ohorongo Cement (Pty) Ltd. Therefore, the company regards the process of developing this deposit as going hand in hand with the obligation to practice good corporate citizenship and to support the economic growth and social development of the population in the area in which it operates.

Corporate Citizenship Project: Our Approach

Ohorongo Cement (Pty) Ltd believes that good corporate citizenship can only be achieved through the creation of a supportive and fair working environment, conducive to employee satisfaction in the service of productivity and quality outputs, as well as the adoption of a broad-based, holistic approach that takes the company’s complete sphere of influence into account and considers the environmental, economic and social impact of the company’s operations on the adjacent communities.

Challenges

Over the six years of its existence, the Ohorongo Otavi Community Trust established itself in the Otavi community as well as in the broader regional and national context. The projects executed by the Trust were usually well received amongst the communities who benefitted, as well as by local and national government.

It is the objective of the Trust to assist the needy residents within the different communities to become self-sufficient, educated and responsible citizens so that they in the long run are able to contribute towards the growth and development of Namibia. Against this background, the Trust’s policy is to initialize projects or to encourage and support private individuals, businesses or public entities to initialize projects which the Trust then executes alone or in co-operation. After project completion the responsibility for sustaining and maintaining an initiative is to be transferred to the appropriate community. This was not always achieved and in case of some projects the Trust remains involved in the maintenance thereof.

Future Projects

The Ohorongo cement plant has limestone resources for the next three hundred years. Thus, it is the sincere intention of Ohorongo Cement to work in collaboration with the Otavi Town Council, the Otjozondjupa Region and through involvement in projects on National scale to brick by brick contribute to the socio-economic development and prosperity of Namibia. Although this goal will not be reached over night, every project concluded is one step closer to achieving the ultimate goal.
