Ohorongo lays strong foundations for Namibia's future

Ohorongo Cement today confirmed a donation of cement to the value of more than a million Namibian Dollars to the Central Namibian Government through the Office of the Prime Minister. One truckload of cement will be donated to each of the 14 region, not only as part of the Silver Jubilee Independence Celebrations, but also towards the general development of Namibia.

According to the Permanent Secretary of the Office of the Prime Minister and Chairperson of the Independence Committee, Mrs Nangula Mbako, the truckload of cement per region will be handed to the selected Governors of each region.

The Governors will then be tasked in-house to identify a project within their regions that they would like to utilize the cement donation for. “The timing of this huge donation is Cement for their contribution towards the development of Namibia and its people, it is a lot of cement,” said Mrs Mbako.

“We want to make a difference and support our Namibian Government, leave a lasting legacy for all Namibians”, said Mr Hans-Wilhelm Schütte, Managing Director of Ohorongo Cement.

This is not the first investment into Namibia of this kind, as the company has invested more than N$ 6.5 million into Corporate Social Investment already since its inception.

Ohorongo Cement has made it clear in a very short time that it is committed to Namibia, its Government and its people.

  • Invested more than N$ 15 million initially to train employees in Germany (transfer of skills & knowledge)
  • A 98.7% Nambian staff complement in such a short period of time
  • Lighthouse effect created an additional 2 152 job opportunities via downstream activities & support services
  • Supporting education and job creation by supporting Vocational Training Centres like NIMT & CATS & offering internships & job attachments
  • Dedicated efforts with OOCT towards Corporate Social Investment, also supporting SME’s
  • Future plans includes expanding product lines
  • Contribute more than 1% towards Namibian GDP
  • Diligently supports Government initiatives like Growth at Home, Vision 2030 and NDP4

Other companies also came on board with various donations towards the 25th Independence Celebrations: Nampower, Namwater, FNB Namibia, NDC, Coca-Cola, Beluga Fishing, Confederation of Namibia Fishing Association and Benguela Sea Products.

Mrs Mbako called on all other businesses to follow suit with similar donations.
