The Expansion Project will include the construction of a new container terminal incorporating an additional 40 hectares of land with a quay length of 2100 m. The new container terminal will accommodate a capacity of 650 000 TEU per annum and will complement the existing 350 000 TEUs per annum. Upon completion which is anticipated by 2017, the new container terminal will realise a deep water depth of 16 m which will be able to accommodate 5000 TEU vessels enabling large vessels to enter the port of Walvis Bay. The financial investment also includes the acquisition of up-to-date equipment for the purpose of efficient container handling resulting in the increase in quay cranes and rubber-tyred gantry cranes.
